Opportunity Books is a used bookstore that combines books and art in one experience. Used books and DVDs of a higher quality are sold as-is for a lower price than brand new books. Books that are worn and torn become art. Whether the individual pages become a canvas for new art or the entire book is carved into a masterpiece, customers can purchase pre-made book artwork or get a customized design. Classes are available in-store, where artists teach consumers how to create simple book art.
As the name suggests, the company is one of opportunity, for books and people. Programs for artists and writers would be available as time goes on. Artists get a community of creators to interact with, a place to sell their exclusive book creations, and support in finding work. Writers would receive similar benefits with professional graphic design, marketing help, and the potential to get published.
This business is just a concept from my SCAD entrepreneurship class and is not an actual business. That said, I can see myself at some point in the future making Opportunity Books a reality.
In crafting this company, I did a LOT of research. Perhaps the greatest challenge was finding a location for my “physical store” and creating realistic numbers for furniture and renovations. Another issue I faced was numbers. As a bookstore, Opportunity Books was immediately in the red. I had to continue developing my idea and looking back at what I wanted to accomplish in order to believably make a profit. It took a lot of effort, but I came up with a business model that hasn’t quite been explored in our world.
