Graphic design is more than creating pretty pictures. In the case of this studio project, design was conveying
an event with words and imagery. For my museum exhibit project at SCAD, I researched Art Nouveau and worked within the limits of size, logo placement, and text length. This particular project focused heavily on the interactions between text and imagery
and how to handle large blocks of text for legibility.
Influenced by the flowing lines of Art Nouveau, the poster feels light and blown away with various pieces swirling and ascending into the distance. My header typeface continues the flow while my body copy has a standardized and easily read font. The brochures continue the idea of flow and replicate the poster with their covers. Imagery is organized in different ways for each brochure to give the artists a unique feel while working around the information I gathered on each.
A lot of research and effort was put into collecting high quality images that I could work with using my swirling design. Minor edits in Photoshop had to be made to some of the images to allow everything to work cohesively. Otherwise, everything was compiled in InDesign and mocked up.
One thing I would like to attempt in the future is a brochure that doubles as a poster. Normally when I grab brochures, I throw them away later because I don’t have a need for them. To give the brochure a little more purpose, I’d like to attempt transforming the cover and two intro pages into a mini poster that impresses audiences.
