Fairytales teach us numerous morals and lessons, whether we recognize it or not. As a writer, I’m always inspired by stories of the past. So as a graphic designer, I thought it was time to let the same stories inspire a book design.
I chose The Devil and the Three Golden Hairs by the Grimm Brothers because of its obscurity and the range of possibilities for imagery. The final book is a mix of a novel and a comic book. All images were hand-sketched and digitized by me. Grayscale and simple contours give the effect of a storyboard, hinting that the story can evolve further with different character styles and settings. Unlike Disney’s solidified interpretations of stories like Cinderella and Peter Pan, my version of this classic tale allows for the reader to fill in the missing pieces.
This project prioritized InDesign and my understanding of laying out a book, working with type, and following a grid. There are still some edits I would like to make, but the overall execution displays my concept of comic panels and storyboarding.
Junior year at SCAD, I took a Sequential art elective that discussed how a comic book is laid out and how to create intriguing visuals that move the story along. I started with character portraits, then read through my story, did a basic layout, and planned what images I needed so the story was
told in type and imagery.
