Garamond Type Analysis Book

InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects, Copywriting

Typography classes are primarily about seeing letters differently. So when tasked to design a unique layout for a font book, I challenged myself to make a traditional serif intriguing.

With significant research into the turbulent history of Garamond, I decided to walk the line between order and chaos. Disorganized spirals crowd the pages, yet there’s an underlying structure that holds the entire piece together. Detailing the history and design of the font sits alongside inspiration for its usage. Burgundy and gold create a sophisticated impression, yet even this palette is reengineered for unconventional purposes.

I gained a lot of inspiration from the history of Garamond as well as my previous project, Royal Fleisch Type Cards. Using a similar brainstorming process, I looked at how the letters fit together. This resulted in spiral designs using various glyphs in the font set.

I’d laid out a few books at this point and decided to try something different for the page numbers and copy. Giving more attention to the design made the experience more visual while white space marked where the important content would land. Despite the chaotic nature of the book, I did stick to a strict grid base in order to maintain visual cues for directed reading.

Coupled with this project was my first animation, a fictional ad for the font. While rough, I was able to maintain consistency with the book and amplify the overall experience and intention behind the graphic elements.
