This project helped me learn and love editorial design. Tasked with picking an article and creating a digital version of the magazine, I picked a small publication called Type and worked on layout, imagery, and color scheme. Previously, I created a print and digital magazine from scratch (Heart of Yarn, 2019). Type was a step forward because I had a better sense of manipulating type, simplifying my designs, and creating interactivity with InDesign.
My version of Type Magazine, using their article The Story of Yatra, has a portrait and landscape version that simulates a print magazine format while having links, videos, and pop-ups for fun add-ons. I kept with their red and white color scheme and brought in images/videos from Pexels to add variety. Pop-ups are used to define unknown terms like “Devanagari” or “dark sans.” Animations highlight specific sections of photos in relation to selected text.
One thing I found interesting was how different Kindle readers read EPUB data. For example, OverDrive adds an aged paper back to every page and doesn’t register videos and animations. Adobe’s Kindle reader does all the above.
I’m still figuring out how to combine the two layouts so my digital books are responsive in design. Beyond that, I’m quite pleased with how this project went and am excited to keep working in editorial design.
