Originally titled Heart of Yarn, Unraveled is a crochet magazine concept that speaks to beginners and crochet admirers. Many crochet magazines are a collection of patterns while Unraveled tells the stories of crocheters, gives helpful tips on learning crochet, and answers the many questions of those getting started.
This two-part project has a print and digital version, creating a unique experience and easy reading between both variations. The magazine itself has gone through many variations from photography to color to typography. And it continues to evolve like a crochet blanket, growing more complete with every stitch.
The real challenge came with layout design and understanding the differences between print and digital. Every medium has a different set of rules. Print can have a spread with all text on one and imagery on the other, but a vertical emagazine needs a little of both on every page. The interactivity of a tablet is also something to think about as words can link to the website or activate an info bubble.
I’ve grown really strong with layout design, but understanding the differences between print and digital is a sticking point. Nonetheless, I continue to develop my formatting and layout skills so I can work on print and digital publications seamlessly.
