Hexbug Graphic Design Internship

Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign

In September of 2021, I got accepted for an internship with IFI Hexbug, a toy company that prioritizes introducing kids to robotics. I lived in Greenville, TX and worked on-site with their graphic design team for six months. I truly enjoyed my time as I learned so much about package design and graphics in the real world, along with how to communicate and work with a team.

While fulfilling my position as a Graphic Design Intern, I worked on photo editing and package design. Every now and then I worked on social media posts and instructions, but I primarily focused on graphics and package layout.

Waited because of confidentiality. Luckily, I got to see these in the store for Christmas 2022 (very cool).

Along with these Vex boxes, I also worked on graphic elements for a Battlebots in-store display and cat toy packaging (not pictured). Most of what I did for these boxes was planning the layout based on brand guidelines, requesting renders, designing, and getting the packages approved.

Photoshop and Illustrator were my best friends as I worked through the design process with my supervisor. While most of it was personal work, I had to get my sketched layouts approved before designing and had to mockup the boxes and let them go the rounds through the higher-ups before officially finishing the project.

I faced a few stressful moments throughout the process. Using the actual toys as a frame of reference, I sketched multiple layouts and had to go back many times to come up with new ideas. Getting renders approved was another puzzle as I had to discern how much editing I wanted to do after. Then came the streaks and spirals. After asking for some help, I took my time, explored, and played with Photoshop until I found a method that highlighted the toy in a meaningful way.
